The Institute for Insurance Law (Institut für Versicherungsrecht [IVersR]), under the direction of Prof. Dr. Manfred Wandt, was founded in 2003 by the Faculty of Law of the Goethe-University of Frankfurt as a scientific institution. The main research fields of the Institute are:

  • Insurance Contract Law
  • Insurance Supervisory Law
  • European and International Insurance Law
  • Industry Insurance
  • Contract, Liability and Indemnity Law
  • Right of Recourse

At the Faculty of Law, the members of the Institute – in cooperation with renowned lecturers from practice – offer lectures in all scientific branches of Insurance Law. This wide range of lectures is greatly appreciated by students who are already interested in career prospects during their specialization studies. The Institute cooperates closely with the Institute for Law and Finance (ILF) and the International Center for Insurance Regulation  (ICIR), founded in 2010.

In cooperation with colleagues from the financial sector, the Institute hosts the Frankfurt Lectures on the Insurance Industry (Frankfurter Vorträge zum Versicherungswesen) and publishes scientific series. Prof. Dr. Wandt is a member of the Insurance Advisory Board of the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht [BaFin]), as well as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Insurance Science (Zeitschrift für die gesamte Versicherungswissenschaft [ZVersWiss]) and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Insurance Law (Zeitschrift Versicherungsrecht [VersR]).

The Institute acts as the presidium (Prof. Dr. Manfred Wandt) and secretariat-general (Prof. Dr. Jens Gal) of the German Chapter of the International Association of Insurance Law/ Association Internationale de Droit des Assurances (AIDA). The Institute is integrated into the European research network »Restatement Group of Insurance Contract Law (PEICL)«, which is entrusted with preparatory work for an European Insurance Contract Law on behalf of the EU.

In addition, Professor Wandt heads the German part of the international research project »Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law (PRICL)«, which, through a uniform framework and uniform terminology, aims to promote the international scientific discourse on reinsurance. The project is carried out in conjunction with the universities at Zurich and Vienna in co-operation with UNIDROIT and is funded by the German and the Austrian Research Foundations and the Swiss National Research Fund.

Together with the University of Mainz, the Institute organises the »Autumn Academy Insurance and Law« (Herbstakademie Versicherung und Recht) every two years in order to promote young talents.

In addition, the Institute organises and hosts the following events:
